Most companies treat the costs of compressed air as a central overhead cost and its true cost is not allocated to the production entities or departments. If the cost is at all allocated, it’s usually on a subjective basis or on criteria such as production area. The consequence is a complete lack of incentive for production or maintenance to take measures to reduce the leakage rate or the compressed air consumption. In many companies it would be possible to connect equipment to the air system that would add € 5000 in operating costs without prior approval. What other € 5000 investment would be permitted on such basis? Industry is beginning to realise the potential that compressed air management will provide in reducing operating costs.
