The study “Compressed Air Systems in the European Union” has researched the energy savings potential and concluded that the measure with greatest savings potential in a compressed air system is leakage-, detection and prevention.

It represents 42% of the savings potential which is 4 times more than the second best alternative which is system design. Leakage detection not only has the greatest savings potential but also provides the fastest pay-back. Most projects have a 3-4 month pay-back period.

The reason is that the effect is immediate and that the repair costs average less than 10% of the leakage costs. Energy savings is just one part of the benefits, completely eliminating the need for new compressor capacity or stabilizing pressure could be even more significant.
